CURRICULUM OPTIONS

By Susan Carlile and Karenza Sutton-Bennett

The below chart provides six 1- to 4-day options that average out to 20 pages per day for teaching The Lady’s Museum. Themes of focus include women’s education, The Lady’s Museum and Lennox’s 1762 novel Sophia (adapted from the History of Harriot and Sophia series across each Lady’s Museum issue, it was the first serialized novel in English), and imperialism.

Please note that the course reader documents are all excerpted into abridged editions, while they are not modernized. Some are annotated, some are awaiting target-user testing for us to develop annotations using our glossing activity. You can assign the linked-to articles below. Visit course reader for more information.

For further historical and scholarly context into the Lady’s Museum (and insight on the value of teaching it) see Susan Carlile and Karenza Sutton-Bennett’s 2022 Aphra Behn Online (ABO) article: “Teaching the Lady’s Museum and Sophia: Imperialism, Early Feminism, and Beyond.” The article will provide you with the necessary background information to prepare for teaching these sections. We also recommend assigning the Charlotte Lennox Oxford Dictionary of National Biography article and/or excerpts from Susan Carlile’s Lennox biography Charlotte Lennox: An Independent Mind.
